NEWS 334 : SETTING A NEW STANDARD IN SUSTAINABLE SHIP DESIGN

The Ship of the Year award, presented annually by The Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE), honors vessels built in Japan that exemplify excellence in technology, design, and social value. This year marks the 35th edition of the award, with nine vessels nominated across various categories.
Kangei Maru was constructed as a next-generation replacement for a vessel that had long served Japan’s offshore resource utilization activities. As the first new vessel of its kind in over seven decades, it represents a significant upgrade in functionality and sustainability.

The ship features a state-of-the-art electric propulsion system and a power management system that dynamically optimizes generator operation based on load demands, significantly reducing environmental impact. Key onboard processing facilities have also been relocated indoors, enhancing both operational efficiency and sanitary conditions.
The selection committee commended Kangei Maru not only for its advanced propulsion and energy systems but also for its highly integrated, space-efficient design. The ship consolidates processing, storage, and distribution facilities within a compact hull, offering a comprehensive and forward-looking solution for long-term operations at sea.
This marks Kyokuyo Shipyard Corporation’s fourth Ship of the Year award, following the Grand Prize in 2010 for City of St. Petersburg, the 2015 Small Cargo Vessel Category Prize for Natori, and the 2022 Small Cargo Vessel Category Prize for Nogami.
At Kyokuyo Shipyard, we remain committed to leading technical innovation in the small and mid-sized shipbuilding industry. Our goal is to continue developing vessels that meet the highest performance standards while contributing to sustainable maritime operations.
